South America is a continent with extremely diverse resources, many of which have remained untapped. Although the mining industry suffered in the late 1990's due to low gold and base metal prices, the gold and base metal industry still attracts the most money in exploration and serves as the regions leading industry today. While the continent is 50% forested and surrounding seas contain a rich marine life, the fishing and forestry industries are still relatively small and are mainly orientated towards domestic markets. Some hardwoods and tropical woods mainly coming from the Amazon Basin where large areas are being deforested are exported, as well as pine from southern Brazil and Chile. Vast areas of commercial forests have been planted in Brazil and Chile for lumber industry.
SAMI has realized that there are significant opportunities for investment and economic growth within these industries and more. For example, the industrial industry is presently facing a wide array of problems: the size of the national markets is small and the technology in the countries is limited. Transportation and distribution networks are weak. Some countries have heavy industries such as steel and iron plants, motor vehicle assembly plants for export, however there is still potential to develop these industries further.
Many governments including Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Venezuela have begun privatizing nationalized industries for immediate financial benefit, such as the transportation and communications industries, however this has resulted in significantly higher unemployment rates and has increased the costs of goods and services.
The explosive growth in the region has brought with it many challenges in turn creating many opportunities for SAMI within South American and the West Indies. The greatest challenges still lie in meeting production schedules while keeping production assets operating at peak efficiency and availability. Training workers, keeping and developing employees, proper Strategic Planning, and integration of cross-departmental improvement programs are all necessary to make this happen. SAMI is helping these companies improve equipment availability, increase productivity, reduce costs and improve the communication and cooperation between the Production, Maintenance, Logistics and Capacity Development functions of Operations, while constantly moving towards Organizational Excellence.

SAMI is aggressively pursuing both private industry and government-owned organizations in the Latin American marketplace and within the last two years our presence in the region has grown significantly.
In 2006, SAMI was selected by both ECOPETROL and BP of Colombia to assist them in improving their business practices in maintenance, logistics, and production. From these initial projects, news of SAMI's ability to create sustainable change spread gaining the attention of the Wood, Mining, Transportation, and Agricultural sectors within the region. This has led to the establishment of our first Latin American representative office located in Santiago, Chile.
SAMI has also established strong relations with Brazilian governmental agencies in addition to Abraman – the Brazilian Association of Maintenance Professionals. As a result, SAMI is developing strategic alliances and relationships in Brazil with companies in the Energy, Mining, and Steel sectors. SAMI plans on establishing an office in Brazil by the end 2008.
We are currently in discussions with a number of large conglomerates in Mexico in the Mining, Petrochemical, Automotive, and Food Processing sectors and we are confident that this will result in the establishment of a SAMI office in Mexico by mid-year 2009.
SAMI has also been approached to work in the Oil and Gas sector in Trinidad and we expect a considerable expansion of our client base in the West Indies in the coming years.
